Privacy Changes in Facebook

Facebook has rolled out a wave of privacy changes. It is acclaimed as one of the great privacy change in Facebook’s history. The changes are many at a time which includes changes in status update, profiles, tags and location. Mark Zuckerberg demonstrated about the privacy changes in his presentation this Tuesday.  Moreover he made a statement that Facebook will make sure that all the users go through the details of the updated version of the privacy settings. The users are given the opportunity to make their own choice with each status update.

The main features in the privacy change are given below:-

Privacy in the Profile:-

While editing the profile, Profile visibility controls appears now next to content. From the Profile editing page itself you change the settings now. There is a button to click for users to come out from the entire Facebook  Platform. This gives the users an upper hand in not dealing with application requests and spam. But surely the developers will be unhappy.

This new privacy change gives users large amount of control. The main control is that the friend’s list is now made private. So that the third party is not able to find who your friends are! If someone by chance from Google finds your Facebook Profile, now they cannot find your friends! Isn’t it amazing??

Moreover the interests in Facebook is shifted to a new system named Connections. The previous interests which were made public can now be made private.

Changes in Facebook Tags:-

In the tags also there are major changes in the privacy settings. According to the preference of the user the tag profile can now be changed. The “Everyone” option has been renamed “Public” to implicate clarity. The Lock Icon is also changed.  Depending upon whether the update is public or friend or custom, the lock icon appears as globe or friend or gear icon. With the help of the status update, which appears in the publisher box, now it is easy to find out who is being tagged. More over there is a great untagging feature. This helps the user to untag him from a particular photo, after requesting the photo’s uploader to delete it. There is no GPS restriction also. This feature helps the user to tag any location.

Since all the privacy changes are added at the Profile page level itself the users are now easily accessible to the Privacy Overhaul.

Clash between the titans- Escalating Rivalry??

Google has indirectly accused Facebook of limiting Google plus invites in their social network. The controversy started when Google Spokesperson Randall Safara posted a video on Google plus explaining how Facebook the social network was limiting the Google Plus invites. In his video, Randall Safara posts a Google Plus invite on his Facebook Social network page, and then explains that the particular post with the invite did not appear in his friend’s News Feeds, while other posts went through without any problem!!!

Google Senior Vice President of Social Vic Gundotra later reposted the Video. “We are getting reports of Google+ invite links not showing up on Facebook news feeds anymore. I wonder how widespread this problem is.”
But most of the Google plus users admit that they can share Google Plus invites on their Facebook easily.

On the Contrary Facebook denied that they are not doing anything illegal and they are blocking Google plus invites on its Social network. The company made a statement explaining that the invites are posted by the Newsfeed which takes more than hundred factors into account. More over the Newsfeed is an algorithmic product which cannot be sabotaged.

This is exactly a sequel to the May episode!!
Last May like in the Hollywood movie Facebook with the help of a famous public relations firm tried to spread negative news stories about Google through the press. But it got backfired when the blogger Christopher Soghoian declined this assignment but also made it public.

Google Plus Verification Badge

Google Plus like face book is a social network where users are able to share photos, videos, links or their location with friends. To make it sure if the person you are adding to your social circle is real Google Plus has introduced a new Badge verification unlike in face book.  The verification badge is basically a checkmark in grey color adjacent to the user’s name. Yu Wen – Ai the Google plus employee in her blog post dated August 20 said that this verification badge program is limited to only celebrities, public figures and those who have large numbers in their circles. She added that the Google team is working on expanding to all users so that they can also have their verification badges. This verification badge easily determines the real profiles which are owned not by imaginary users but by real verified people. But Yu Wen – Ai   did not give the exact procedures to obtain the verification badge.

This pinning of verification badge on the users stops impersonation and motivates the users to open the Google Plus account under their real name. In the near future this Google Plus Verification Badge will be available to all on the  Google Plus social network. This Verification Badge is like the Verified Account Badge on Twitter.

Start a Google plus hangout from You tube

Brian Glick, Google’s product manager announced a new feature in Google plus which will allow us to start a Google plus hangout session from You tube. The entire Idea is to easily watch a movie or a video together with your friends. The only requirement is that the video should be available on You Tube.

Now every You Tube video has a small share Button beneath it, which will help us to invite our friends and to watch the video together. This can be seen as a first step towards enabling Hangouts with live video, which will mean that you can even watch the next Football world cup with all our friends.

Google is pooling  up all the resources in its kitty and the amalgamation has so far been impressive. I will soon publish  a small “How to Start a Google plus hangout from You tube” in the Google plus How to section

Google Inc all set to buy Motorola Mobility

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California, USA – Google Inc. will buy the mobile phone maker Motorola Mobility for 12,500 million dollars in cash, which is so far the largest acquisition by the company.

The purchase is a sign that the online search leader is serious about its plans for expansion beyond its core Internet business and want to settle in the fast growing mobile market

Google will pay $ 40 per share, a premium of 63% over the closing price of Motorola Mobility Friday.

The Google Android operating system works on phones that compete with the iPhone, BlackBerry and Windows mobile devices.

Motorola Mobility was separated from the rest of Motorola in January. The company refocused as a manufacturer of phones with Android interface, but has struggled to compete with Apple Inc. and Asian manufacturers of smart phones.

The total commitment to Motorola’s Android Mobility has created a natural fit for our two companies. Larry Page the CEO of Google said in a statement. “Together, we will create incredible experiences for the user and will boost the potential of all the Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers,.

The agreement has been approved by the boards of both companies.

It is expected to close later this year or early 2012, but the deal may face scrutiny from regulators. Google, which purchased DoubleClick for U.S. $ 3,200 million in 2008, took almost an year to get approval from the authorities.

What Google probably wants to acquire is the virtual treasure that Motorola Mobility has, possessing more than 17,000 patents on cell phone technology.

Google just lost to a bidding race that included Microsoft Corp., Apple and Research In Motion Ltd. in the bidding for thousands of patents from Novell Inc., a maker of networking software, and Nortel Networks, a Canadian manufacturer of telecommunications equipment.

Motorola has about three times more patents than Nortel.

Shares of Motorola Mobility rose by $ 14.72 where as the Shares of Google, fell  by $ 14.68.

Google Plus all set to be the Leader of Social Networks

Here is a good news for  the Google plus Lovers. Google plus is all set to gobble up the Twitter bird and the Linked In User base count in an year’s time. 13% of the total U.S adult population have already signed in for Google Plus and it is expected to reach 22% very soon. This was the result of a poll conducted by Bloom berg and You Gov poll among 1003 adults in the last week of July and the first week of August.

Face Book which might face a cat on the wall situation has a huge user base (71% of U.S adults), but that number might come down in an year’s time. There are mixed responses from Face book and Google plus users with the former section planing to cut down their time spent on FB and the later section becoming inactive or passive users in Google plus.

The Twitter bird can be happy about the poll results which gave it a projected growth rate of 3% over the next one year. Google plus now needs to worry a lot about the Inactive users and should find a way or two to bring them in the repeat/active visitor base.

ComScore analysis hands an All out Victory for Google plus

Com score’s analytics wing has reported that Google plus has already crossed the 25 million mark and that too leaving out the mobile users. With just 20 million users at the beginning of July this giant leap is indeed interesting for analysts and painful for its competitors.
Even though the other networks like MySpace, Facebook and Twitter have a much larger user base, Google plus has overtaken them at the rate of user addition to its account. Therewere other reports on the web that uses were spending much less time on Google plus, on the contrary Comscore has reported that people are spending 50% more time with this Google’s new baby.
One possible reason for this huge expansion of reader base can be attributed to the well established Gmail subscriber base. As you can find it is easy to add people who were already in your contact book.

Google’s “Real Time Search” makes a Second Debut

There is a good news for all the lovers of Google real-time search. As you would have guessed it, the Realtime search is making a second debut.
For those who are new to Google’s real-time search, here is a simple example. Any mega event would take at least hours to be reported in a website, whereas millions of tweets would have provided enough information on that event by that time. Google decided to cash in that and started to display Twitter tweets and Facebook updates whenever there was a major event.

This however was put in the cold storage after a failed agreement talks with Twitter about Google accessing its data. From that time Google was actively working on making it alive. Now with a WMD named Google plus in its arsenal, Google has announced that its real-time search will soon be up and running.
